LEARNING TO FLY HELICOPTERS

To be able to fly must be man’s most desirable need.  The absolute feeling of freedom, space and power surely can’t be compared to anything man can do with his feet fixed to mother earth.   But like they say in the classics: “If man was supposed to fly he would have been given wings.”  But instead we were given the Wright brothers.

Since the invention of the airplane this desire of man can be partly fulfilled.  We have come a long way since the first airplanes were build with hundreds of shapes, sizes and means of propulsion to mention a few aspects.  And then came the greatest of them all…….the helicopter.  Once again like they say in the classics: “To fly is heaven but to hover is divine.”

But what makes helicopter flight so different?  One of the main reasons must be the fact that a helicopter can hover and therefore it can land at any given place where it can fit.  In other words it gives man more freedom.  But does this freedom come at a price and excuse the pun?  Yes and for two reasons.  Learning to fly a helicopter does take more skill and coordination than a fixed wing and is more expensive which sometimes puts it out of reach of the average man.  Flying a helicopter in my opinion is an art and I will stick with this comment.

The question is can we do something to make acquiring this art easier?  Does one need to be born with certain skills and a certain mind set?  The fact of the matter is one needs a certain amount of coordination and in my opinion some form of “feel” to be able to master any form of flight.  Can these characteristics be taught or acquired?  I am simply going to answer by saying that most people can eventually be taught how to fly but the problem is that not all people that are able to fly will necessarily be safe flyers.  To quote a famous saying: “Flying is not inherently dangerously but it is extremely unforgiving to human error.”

I have written an eBook based on a typical helicopter private pilot training syllabus wherein I explain every sequence’s aim and more importantly highlight certain common mistakes and errors student make during a particular sequence.  I am not implying the book will make you a better pilot or make the actual flying easier but is has been proven over so many years that the best way to achieve something is to learn from other people’s mistakes.  It is for this reason that I continuously update and improve the book as I myself learn new things everyday from students.
